Atomic urbanism
Transformation of landscapes
and cities in nuclear Britain
The Harwell nuclear plant was the main center for atomic energy research and development in the UK from the 1940s to the 1990s, which had significant implications for the rural area that relied heavily on agriculture for employment prior to WWII. The paper discusses the factors and challenges considered in the early stages of nuclear development, during which highly cautious attitudes led to the remote allocation of facilities in rural areas with low populations. The study also examines exceptions to this trend, as tensions between human and demographic factors were present. The research project, United Kingdom Atomic Urbanism, investigates the uranium-driven development that supplied the Soviet Cold War Nuclear Power Program with large quantities of Uranium and focuses on a cross-border comparison of how uranium transformed landscapes, architecture, and people in cities long after mining ended.
