Jet fuel urbanism

Hinterlands of budget air travel

This research project examines the global network of oil infrastructures and the local impacts of aviation fuel consumption in Berlin's airports. The case study focuses on Schwedt, Germany, where crude oil is distilled into Jet A1 fuel, which is then transported to Berlin for refueling. The research highlights the actors and spatial implications of the production network and its impact on the urbanism of Schwedt, a shrinking city compared to Berlin's recent boom. The study's findings offer new insights into planetary urbanization's metabolic vehicles in both architectural and urban scales.
